Samsung PM893 cs PM897

Samsung offers two SATA SSD families, available in a range of capacities and write endurance levels to meet just about any application that you can think of. So which model is the correct choice for your data center requirements? Here are some key differences.

Samsung PM893

Considered the successor of the PM883, the Samsung PM893 series of SSDs offers a good solution for high reliability, low power server boot drives, and are optimized for read-intensive or mixed workloads. They’re especially well-suited for a range of mainstream read-intensive applications, including content delivery networks (CDN), collaboration platforms, unstructured data storage, and hyper-converged infrastructure. Engineered for sequential read/write speeds of up to 550/520 MB/s and random read/write speeds of up to 98,000/30,000 IOPS, the PM893 is ideal for handling massive amounts of data. They tend to be a less expensive option than the PM897, but are not as durable, with a write endurance level of 1.3 drive writes per day (DWPD*). A 3-year warranty is included.

* DWPD indicates the entire capacity of the drive can be written that many times per day.  For example, a 1TB drive with a DWPD of 3.0 could handle 3TB of write operations per day.

Samsung PM897

The PM897 SSD is the recommended replacement for the older SM883. Samsung PM897 SSDs provide increased write endurance, making this series an ideal solution for mixed read/write workloads, such as online transaction processing, database servers, general purpose/dedicated cache tier of hyper-converged infrastructure, or logging applications. To simplify customer qualification and ensure reliable high volume, all SSDs in the PM897 series use the same V-NAND flash memory and Samsung controller. Overall, these are more expensive than the PM893 series but are more durable, with a write endurance level of 3 drive writes per day (DWPD) and a 5-year warranty.
