Millions of drivers around the world rely on dash cams to provide a layer of liability protection as they drive. The market has greatly expanded over the past decade and dash cams are now more affordable than ever. As more footage is recorded, drivers naturally want to expand the storage capacity of their dash cams.
It is important to note that not all microSD cards are built for dash cams. A “budget brand” microSD card may work for a while but then fail suddenly. This is because dash cams require a card that can be written over many times. If the dash cam is used every day, you can see how quickly video data on the microSD card will be written over. Multiply that by weeks and years, and a card could be re-written thousands of times.
Only use microSD cards optimized for high endurance
You need a memory card that is optimized for high endurance dash cam use. As of summer 2021, almost all consumer dash cam manufacturers use microSD cards instead of the larger SD format. So look for a microSD card that is manufactured and tested specifically with endurance in mind. We also recommend investing just a few dollars more to get a higher capacity card, such as a 64GB card (or larger!) instead of a 32GB card. This extends your card’s recording time by 3-4 hours and provides you with extra peace of mind.
