Don’t miss out on any opportunities! If you’re gearing up for hunting season and own a trail cam, now is a good time to test your camera to make sure that your SD card is storing image and video files properly. It’s not fun to spend weeks planning your hunt, only to find out once you’re in the field that your trail cam is not storing video properly! If you need a replacement SD card, or if you just want to increase your storage capacity, there are a few things to keep in mind.
- As trail cams are for outdoor use, they are exposed to moisture and wide temperature swings. A budget SD card will not last very long in such an environment. You will need a rugged card for your trail cam and it should be manufactured specifically for these conditions.
- SD cards used in trail cams should also be rated for high endurance as they are subject to many recording cycles. These high endurance cards are designed specifically for applications where videos and photos will be written over many times.
- We also recommend higher capacity cards. After all, you don’t want to miss any action during video playback. No one has complained about having too much storage capacity!
Most current trail cams and game cams use either SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) or SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) cards. SDXC cards have a much larger storage capacity than SDHC cards. (If you have a very old trail camera that only accepts SD cards, SDHC and SDXC cards will not work with it! You will need an SD card from a manufacturer such as SanDisk or Delkin.)
One last thing: Consider buying a spare SD card, along with your spare camera battery. If you’re in the field and something does go wrong, it’s always good to have a backup. You may also want to keep your trophy pictures safe on a separate card so they aren’t written over!
